Functional Restoration 

What is Functional Restoration?

A combined physical and psychological treatment programme designed to help patients with back pain to restore function and quality of life. This intervention is recommended in NICE Guidance (2016) to be one the most effective ways to treat persistent back pain. The aim of the treatment is to train patients to become experts at understanding their persistent low back pain, to manage flare-ups in pain effectively, to set goals to improve function, to reduce reliance on analgesic medication, and to engage more effectively in work and leisure activities.

Who is it for?

The programme is for people with persistent low back pain who are struggling to return to normal activities of daily living and are at risk of becoming chronically disabled by their back pain. This could include people who have noticed they have become fearful of moving, have been given many conflicting opinions regarding the cause of their back pain or are struggling to stay at work due to their pain.

What does treatment involve?

The treatment is provided by David Rogers, a highly experienced physiotherapist who specialises in treating back pain using both physical and psychological principles, underpinned by a cognitive behavioural approach.

Participation includes physical exercise sessions, education regarding the biology of pain, management of flare-ups, graded activity and goal setting. Participants are taught relaxation skills to help with rehabilitation.

How many sessions are required?

An initial 90 minute assessment and treatment session will establish what physical and psychological factors might be preventing recovery. David will then guide you as to how many sessions you may need to maximise your recovery.

What outcomes should I expect from treatment?

Most people report that back pain impacts much less on activities of daily living, that they have a better understanding of their pain and how to manage flare-ups in pain effectively, they feel more confident in performing activities they had previously been avoiding and have less reliance on pain medication.
